Bus, van or your own car to a Tromsø kayak tour

Every winter kayak tour from Tromsø paddles on Kvaløya, across the Sandnessund Bridge, so the day starts with a ride. Two tours use a bus from the harbour and one a public bus with the guide. Steam Tours run a van on one trip and leave the drive to you on the other. How you travel shapes the whole day.

All five paddle on Kvaløya

Tromsø sits on the small island of Tromsøya, and the kayak tours cross to Kvaløya, a much larger island to the west. The Sandnessund Bridge links the two, so every tour begins with a road trip.

The ride decides where you meet and how long the whole day takes. The table sums up the five, and the sections below add the details that matter on the morning.

Destination Tromsø's bus from Prostneset

Both Destination Tromsø tours meet at Prostneset, Tromsø's harbour terminal at Samuel Arnesens gate 5. A bus takes the group out to the company's basecamp and brings you back after the fire.

GetYourGuide's summary of reviews for the wildlife tour at ~$254 says clearer meeting-point details would help. Arrive early, look for the tour bus and keep your booking open on your phone.

The bus is part of the listed time, so a 5-hour tour includes the drive both ways. The wildlife listing marks the transfer as optional, so ask Destination Tromsø first if you would rather drive. On the easy-going tour at ~$227 the bus there and back is included.

KaruArctic's public bus to Håkøybotn

KaruArctic meets outside the tourist shop at Kirkegata 2 near the harbour. Viator gives the time as 8:45 am. From there you and the guide take an ordinary public bus out to the bay at Håkøybotn.

After the paddle the guide takes you back to the nearest bus stop for the ride into town. The listing does not say whether the fare is included, so carry a way to pay in case it is not.

With a hire car you can also drive to Håkøybotn yourself. KaruArctic's seal tour at ~$204 takes six people at most, so tell the company how you are arriving when you book.

Steam Tours' van to Eidkjosen

Steam Tours' fjord tour at ~$237 leaves from Prostneset in a van and drives to the company's own pier at Eidkjosen. The listing says you are on the water within the hour of setting off.

There is no hotel pickup, so you make your own way to Prostneset. The terminal sits on the waterfront in the center, within walking distance of many central hotels.

The pier has changing rooms and storage, so you can leave dry clothes and a bag there. The van brings you back to Prostneset after hot drinks and pastries in the café.

A short van ride and a café pier

Steam Tours' 220-minute tour drives a group of six from Prostneset to its pier at Eidkjosen. Drinks and pastries follow the paddle, and the listing is new with no reviews yet.

The 2-hour paddle by car or local bus

Steam Tours' 2-hour tour at ~$183 starts at the pier itself, Eidvegen 526 in Kvaløysletta. You arrange the trip out by car or local bus yourself.

From the center it is a short drive over the Sandnessund Bridge. Without a car, look up the local bus times before the day and leave some slack for the return.

Driving yourself in a Tromsø winter

A hire car gives you the most freedom, but winter roads here need care. Ask for studded tires when you rent. Expect packed snow or ice on the roads.

Daylight is short in midwinter, and in the polar night the sun does not rise at all. Plan to drive back in the dark, and allow extra time if snow is falling.

None of the listings describe parking, so ask the operator about it. Our guide to the best weeks shows how the light changes through the winter.

Timing the morning

Winter mornings in Tromsø are dark, and pavements near the harbour are often icy. Leave your hotel with time to spare, and wear boots with good grip for the walk to the meeting point.

Carry your dry change of clothes in a small bag. On Steam Tours you can leave it in the storage at the pier, and on the bus tours the guide can tell you where it goes.

If you are staying outside the center, check the first city buses before you commit to an early start such as KaruArctic's 8:45 am meeting time.

Which ride suits your day

  • No car and no wish to navigate, either Destination Tromsø tour from Prostneset
  • Happy on a public bus, KaruArctic from Kirkegata 2
  • Short on time, Steam Tours' van, on the water within the hour
  • Hire car already booked, the 2-hour paddle at the pier

Pairing a paddle with an evening aurora trip works best with a tour that gets you back to town early. Our kayak and aurora day plan and the price guide help you fit it together, and the tour comparison covers everything else.

Meeting points and rides

Where do Tromsø kayak tours meet?

Destination Tromsø and Steam Tours' van tour meet at Prostneset, the harbour terminal at Samuel Arnesens gate 5. KaruArctic meets at Kirkegata 2, and the 2-hour paddle starts at the pier in Kvaløysletta.

Do any of the tours offer hotel pickup?

None of the five lists hotel pickup. Steam Tours' listing says so plainly, and the others start from fixed meeting points in the center or at the pier.

How do I get to KaruArctic's bay?

You ride a public bus with the guide from the center to Håkøybotn on Kvaløya. Ask about the fare when you book.

Can I drive to the kayak tours myself?

Yes for the 2-hour paddle, which expects you at Eidvegen 526, and you can also drive to KaruArctic's bay. Winter driving means studded tires and dark afternoons, so allow extra time.

I could not find the bus at Prostneset. What should I do?

Arrive early so there is time to look, and keep the operator's phone number from your booking at hand. GetYourGuide's review summary says the meeting point can be hard to find.
